Penrose Hospital offers an accredited four-year training program in combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. The Penrose Residency Program is a unique community-based program located along the eastern edge of the Southern Rocky Mountains and base of Pikes Peak. Eight resident positions are available with two new residents accepted each year. The small size of the program allows for a cohesive and friendly atmosphere that fosters learning and allows for individualized training and development. Residents train in a private-practice setting with an emphasis on close contact with clinicians, timely sign-out of cases, and appreciation of the administrative and managerial aspects inherent in running a successful pathology practice. Penrose residents are exposed to a plethora of both bread-and-butter surgical pathology as well as rare and challenging cases. Upon graduation, residents feel confident in their knowledge and abilities and adapt well to a variety of work environments.
Penrose-St. Francis Health Services consists of Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center. Training occurs almost exclusively at Penrose Hospital, the 364-bed anchor hospital of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, providing secondary and tertiary medical-surgical services and specializing in cancer care, cardiac care, emergency trauma care, and physical rehabilitation. The Penrose Cancer Center provides exposure to an increasing number of unusual cases seen in the Pathology Department.
Residents play an active teaching role in several conferences, including tumor boards, monthly specialty conferences, and several resident-led conferences.
The Pathology Laboratory is located on the second floor of the hospital. The Department contains state-of-the-art equipment encompassing Flow Cytometry, Electron Microscopy, an in-house Blood Bank Donor Center, Hemochromatosis Clinic, and Cytogenetics and Molecular Pathology Laboratories. Modern facilities provide a pleasant work environment with dual resident rooms housing individual resident desks, computers, and microscopes.
