    Enabling Technology
The da Vinci® Si Surgical System consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon's console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a high-performance vision system and proprietary EndoWrist® Instruments. Powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology, the surgeon's hand movements are scaled, filtered and seamlessly translated into precise movements of the EndoWrist Instruments. The System cannot be programmed, nor can it make decisions on its own. The da Vinci® Si Surgical System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from our surgeons.

How the da Vinci® Si Surgical System Works in the Operating Room

A surgical robot is actually a collection of wristed "servant" tools called manipulators, which receive digital instructions from an interfaced computer. The surgeon, seated at an ergonomically designed video console with a 3-D display, gives digital instructions by controlling sophisticated hand grips - essentially, joysticks with seven degrees of freedom, adding the pitch, the yaw, and a pincer-like movement. The manipulators placed inside the patient's body duplicate the surgeon's hand movements at the console, and software filters out even physiologic hand tremors, while a camera inside the patient's body allows a precise look at every detail.

The da Vinci® Si Surgical System has been successfully used in tens of thousands of minimally-invasive procedures worldwide. More than 3000 urological, gynecological and GYN oncology, cardiac and general surgery da Vinci procedures have been performed at Penrose-St. Francis since 2005.

    Safe and Effective
Surgeons and patients around the world have found da Vinci Surgery to be safe and effective minimally invasive treatment option for a range of complex conditions. In fact, roughly 3,000 peer-reviewed studies have been published demonstrating the clinical effectiveness of da Vinci Surgery.
