Approximately 17 million people in the United States have diabetes. Fifteen per cent of those with diabetes will develop at least one foot wound. The leading risk factor for developing a wound is having had a previous wound. Other factors that contribute to the development of the diabetic foot wounds are peripheral neuropathy, vascular disease, foot deformity and infection.
