Coplin brings 20 years of experience and international respect to new position.
ENGLEWOOD, CO - (May 22, 2013) – Centura Health is pleased to announce that Dr. William Coplin, MD, internationally respected for his expertise in neurocritical care, has joined our network as the Medical Director of Neurocritical Care for both St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood and the Centura Health network throughout Colorado and Western Kansas. He will be developing the Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program and will provide training for various specialties in the care of patients with brain injury, stroke, epilepsy and other neurological disorders.
In his new position, Dr. Coplin will work closely with St. Anthony Hospital and the entire Centura Health network to develop and train neurocritical care intensivists, and assist in neuroscience development and research, while maintaining and enhancing the quality of care for the communities Centura Health serves.
“We’re thrilled that Dr. Coplin has joined the Centura Health family and know that his expertise and neurocritical care leadership will be a great complement to the continued growth of our neurosciences capabilities,” said Jeff Brickman, President and CEO of St. Anthony Hospital. “Dr. Coplin’s demonstrated experience in achieving quality results will elevate the standard of neurocritical care available to residents of Colorado and the entire western region.”
Dr. Coplin is internationally recognized for his expertise in neurocritical care, lectures widely and has participated in numerous expert panels. His work has been published extensively on a variety of topics ranging from acute stroke prevention, response to thrombolytic therapy, clot resolution in brain hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury, as well as many other critical care topics.
Dr. Coplin received his medical training at Baylor College of Medicine and completed his residency in Neurology at the University of Washington. His fellowships include Critical Care Medicine and Neurosurgical Critical Care, also from the University of Washington. He has been a member of the faculty of Wayne State University since 1996, where he conceived and executed a Neurocritical Care training program for neurotrauma, neurocritical care, and pulmonary and critical care medicine fellows. He has received multiple teaching awards from Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center, where he served as Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgical Surgery.
Dr. Coplin has been appointed to several national boards of directors and committee roles, including the executive committee for the Intraventricular Thrombolysis Trial with the NACABI, Sedation and the Analgesia Practice Parameters Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is a member of the board of directors and a founding member of the Neurocritical Care Society, a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and past chair of the Critical Care and Emergency section of the American Academy of Neurology and Neurosciences section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He sits on the executive committee of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons & Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care.
Dr. Coplin has devoted more than a decade to studies designed to determine physiological responses to a variety of therapeutic interventions. These observations have had a major influence on our understanding of the use of mechanical ventilation and airway care in brain injury, blood pressure reduction in acute ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage, the response of the brain to osmotic therapies, and the role of biomarkers following subarachnoid hemorrhage and other acute brain injuries.
