Fact Sheet

After 60 railroad workers were injured in a train derailment near Leadville in the late 1880s, B.P. Anderson, MD, and four sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration began a door-to-door fundraising campaign to build a hospital in Colorado Springs. Since its inception, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has been infused with vision and dedicated to clinical excellence, whole-person care and serving the unique needs of its communities.

Distinctive Services

While Penrose-St. Francis (PSF) offers a full complement of emergency, medical and surgical services, several programs and clinical specialties truly distinguish the system:

  • The Penrose Cancer Center brings leading-edge, compassionate cancer care to the people of southern Colorado.
  • Penrose-St. Francis' acclaimed Heart Institute consistently achieves outcomes that exceed national benchmarks.
  • St. Francis Medical Center specializes in maternal-child health with a state-of-the-art birthing center, a Level IIIA neonatal intensive care unit and a pediatric unit.
  • St. Francis Health Center excels in outpatient surgery and behavioral health services.
  • Penrose’s EAP Corporate Health Services helps businesses retain healthy and productive employees.
  • The PSF Health Learning Center is dedicated to healthy aging through an interdisciplinary approach to managing chronic diseases.
  • The PSF Laboratories provide a comprehensive range of tertiary care and anatomic and clinical diagnostic services ranging from bedside point of care chemistries to electron microscopy and molecular testing.

     

Expanded services

  • St. Francis Medical Center, a $207-million full-service hospital, opened in August 2008 as the only full-service hospital in northeast Colorado Springs. Services include birth center, emergency service, Level III neonatal intensive care unit, inpatient/outpatient surgery, pediatric unit and Level IV Trauma Center.
  • Five-story E Tower opened January 2005 on the Penrose Hospital campus. This tower boasts a high-tech, 36-bed, critical care unit; 36 private-bed cardiovascular floor; Wellness Center; physician offices; main lobby; pharmacy; gift shop; registration area; boardroom and courtyard.
  • The emergency department at Penrose Hospital was expanded in 2007.

  • Named one of “America’s 50 Best Hospitals” for 2008, 2009 and 2010 by HealthGrades, the only recipient in Colorado and the top 1 percent in the nation.
  • Recipient of the HealthGrades 2010 Pulmonary Care and Critical Care Excellence Awards

  • Only organization in Southern Colorado to receive the 2007 and 2008 American Heart Association’s “Fit Friendly Employer” Award.
  • 2004 J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Award for service excellence.
  • Penrose Cancer Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and is the only facility in Colorado accredited for radiation therapy by the American College of Radiology.
  • Penrose Cancer Center is the only facility in Colorado named to participate in a multi-million dollar National Cancer Institute (NCI) pilot project that is bringing state-of-the-art treatment to local community hospitals.
  • PSF’s inpatient rehabilitation unit has the highest level of accreditation from the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
  • The pulmonary rehabilitation program at PSF is accredited as a program of excellence by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
  • PSF’s Diabetes and Renal Care Center is fully accredited by the American Diabetes Association.
  • National Research Corporation awarded Penrose-St. Francis the 2005/2006 Consumer Choice Award, recognizing the system as having highest quality and image in its market and serving the needs of the community in an exemplary fashion.
