President & CEO, Penrose-St. Francis Health ServicesPresident, Centura Health South State Operating Group
Margaret joined Penrose-St. Francis Health Services as the President & CEO in November 2008. She oversees the daily operations of the 522-bed system, which includes Penrose Hospital, St. Francis Medical Center, Penrose Mountain Urgent Care, Penrose Community Urgent Care, and Penrose Urgent Care at Cripple Creek. In July 2009, Margaret was also named the South State Operating Group president for Centura Health, overseeing operations at all Centura hospitals in southern Colorado: Penrose-St. Francis in Colorado Springs; St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo; and St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City. Additionally, she serves as chair of Centura Health’s Trauma Council, leading the first integrated health care network nationally to establish a trauma system linked to its own facilities and services with 20 facilities and a variety of essential services. From 2005-2008, Margaret was the CEO of Sutter Health Partners and Vice President of New Product Development for Sutter Health in Sacramento, Calif. Prior to that, she was CEO of Marin Community Health for five years, which included Sutter Health affiliates Marin General Hospital and Novato Community Hospital. She has also served as CEO of the Yampa Valley Medical Center in Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo. In addition, she has been the Vice President for EMS and Trauma for the HealthONE Corporation. She was named one of the Colorado Springs Business Journal’s “Women of Influence” in 2009, and one of the Bay Area’s 100 Most Influential Women in Business by the San Francisco Business Times in 2003 and 2004. Margaret is a certified fitness instructor with the American Council on Exercise, and was named to Becker's Hospital Review’s 2012 and 2015 "100 Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know" list. In 2013, she was a recipient of the Girl Scouts Women of Distinction Award, and in 2014, was named the Colorado Springs Business Journal’s “Healthiest CEO.” Margaret is a certified fitness instructor, and maintains her certification by teaching weekly community boot camp classes at Penrose Hospital.
Senior Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services
Jamie joined Penrose-St. Francis in 2008 and has served as both the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President before assuming his current role. Prior to coming to Centura Health, Jamie spent five years in hospital management with Tenet Healthcare as Vice President of Operations at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, North Carolina, and Associate Administrator at Atlanta Medical Center. He began his career in health care as a Medical Service Corps officer in the U.S. Army. He served four years active duty, including two years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington D.C., and two years in the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.In his current role, he provides operational oversight for both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center, while continuing to directly oversee the Cardiovascular Services, Oncology and Rehab service lines. Jamie develops strategies and operational plans to enhance patient care and grow market share within the Penrose-St. Francis markets.
Jamie holds a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. He is also a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).
Site Administrator and Chief Operating Officer, St. Francis Medical Center
A physical therapist by training, Mark has more than 20 years of health care leadership experience. He has been with Centura Health since 2006 when he joined St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City as its Vice President of Operations. In 2008 he was the Vice President of Operations for SFMC where he led the final opening phases of northern El Paso County’s only full-service hospital. Mark has led a variety of strategic initiatives for Penrose-St. Francis, including opening of Select Long-Term Care Hospital at SFMC, the migration from level IV to level III trauma status and expanding St. Francis to its current 200 beds in 2014. Today, Mark is responsible for providing day-to-day operational and strategic leadership for SFMC and serves as the hospital’s representative in all operational-related activities.
Mark holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Northwestern College in Iowa, a Master of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Iowa, and a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Regis University. He is a member of the American College for Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and serves as a board member for the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region and Mount St. Francis Nursing Center.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO), South State Operating Group
Dr. Peter Walsh joined the St. Francis Medical Center leadership team in 2008. He has more than 30 years of medical expertise and leadership experience, including a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force. Prior to joining SFMC, he supported Centura Center for Occupational Medicine (CCOM) in Colorado Springs and Pueblo as an Occupational Health Physician. He was also the CEO and Commander of the 10th Medical Group, U.S. Air Force Academy Hospital, and earlier in the same role for the 3rd Medical Group at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. Dr. Walsh holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and is Board Certified in Aerospace Medicine.
Chief Nursing Officer, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and South State Operating Group
Cynthia comes to Penrose-St. Francis from the Medical Center of Aurora (HealthOne-HCA) where she had been a Vice President and CNO since 2010. As the CNO, she was responsible for overseeing nearly 900 Full Time Employees (FTEs), including 632 nurses in 346 licensed beds across three main campuses. Cynthia is responsible for the planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and evaluation of Nursing Services across the health care continuum at PSF, and integrates Nursing Services with all hospital services and functions. She has the authority and responsibility for developing organization-wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients’ nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated and met. She is also responsible for Nursing Services at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo and St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City.From 2006-2010, Cynthia served as the Vice President of Adult Critical Care Services and Nursing Operations, and the Interim CNO, for Medical City Dallas – a Magnet-designated, 700-bed HCA hospital. Medical City Dallas was the first hospital in North Texas to achieve Magnet accreditation in 2003, and Cynthia was instrumental in the Magnet re-accreditation in 2008. Additionally, over a period of 18 years, she served in various director positions at the DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center at Methodist Hospital in Houston.Cynthia holds a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Buffalo. She is currently enrolled in a PhD Program, specializing in healthcare administration, and expects to graduate in 2016. She is a Board Certified Nurse Executive, and is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, American Nurses Association and an active member of the Colorado Nurse Leaders Association. She served as President-Elect of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses in Dallas, and has been a lecturer at the university and community levels, speaking on nursing practice topics. Cynthia is also a published author on topics ranging from evidenced-based practice to community health.
Chief Medical Officer, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services
Dr. Gil Porat had been practicing as a Hospitalist at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services since 2002 with Colorado Springs Health Partners, the largest multi-specialty physician-owned practice on the Front Range, before assuming his current role in 2012. As CMO, Dr. Porat provides leadership, strategic direction and overall operational management of physician services and medical staff administration. He assists in developing strategies, policies, goals, and objectives for clinical service areas, and addresses operational issues vital to building effective relationships between PSF, its medical staff, and regional physicians who might use our facilities for patient care services.Dr. Porat attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha Honors in 1999, and completed his Internship and Residency in Portland, Oregon. He served as Chief of Medicine for Penrose Hospital from 2005-2007 and again from 2009-2011. In 2012, Dr. Porat became the first physician in Colorado Springs to be certified in Internal Medicine with a Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine designation by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Porat is an accomplished author with several medical journal articles and even a fiction novel to his credit. He also produces a podcast series entitled “Hospital Medicine” – which covers a variety of medical topics – that pulls in more than 20,000 listeners a month (free on iTunes). A staunch advocate for health and wellness, Dr. Porat is a Certified Personal Trainer.
Chief Financial Officer, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and South State Operating Group
Danny has more than 22 years of finance experience in the health care industry. As CFO, he oversees financial operations for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services as well as St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo and St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City. He has also held positions at PSF as Controller, Assistant Vice President of Finance, and Vice President of Finance for St. Francis Medical Center. From 2002-2005, Danny was CFO and Principal in Surgical Development Systems, Inc., an ambulatory surgery center development and management company in South Florida. He has also served as Controller at an HCA hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Danny currently serves on the church council of First Lutheran Church and is Committee Chair for Boy Scout Troop 187. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of New Orleans, an MBA from Nova Southeastern University, and is a licensed CPA in the state of Texas.
Vice President of Human Resources for South State Operating Group
Jim is responsible for providing strategic leadership in the Group’s operational HR functions of employment, compensation, employee relations, and leadership development to ensure the organization remains compliant with laws and regulatory agencies. Jim provides strategic counsel on the administration of policies and programs related to HR services, and manages the Group’s HR departments for quality and efficiency.
Jim began his career with Centura Health in 1986 at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and has worked in the HR arena since 1992, serving in a variety of roles including recruitment, compensation, and employee relations. He also served as the Vice President of HR for Penrose-St. Francis until 2007. Prior to assuming his Group role, Jim served as Vice President of Compensation for Centura Health where his responsibilities included oversight of compensation programs throughout the system, executive compensation, pay practice standardization initiatives, all incentive and at-risk programs, and oversight of external clinical and non-clinical agency contracting. Jim has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management and is a member of both the Society of Human Resource Management and World At Work (Society of Compensation Professionals).
Vice President of Mission Integration, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and South State Operating Group
Larry is responsible for the integration of the mission of the organization and its partners. He advances the heritage, values and healing ministry in order that it permeates the culture and leadership team of the organization. His previous positions include Executive Director, National Association of Catholic Chaplains; Vice President of Mission and Ministry, Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System; Senior Associate of Mission Services, Catholic Health Association of the U.S.; Chaplain, Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital; and Adjunct Faculty at St. Louis University, Concordia University. Among his many awards include the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, and the Excellence in Service Award from the Veterans Administration Health Service. Larry holds a Master’s Degree in Health Care Administration from St. Louis University/Webster University, a Master’s Degree in Human Service Counseling from Webster University, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from St. Benedict's College.
Vice President of Quality, South State Operating Group Sue is an accomplished, results-oriented leader who brings a wealth of experience, expertise and passion for improving health care quality and safety to our organization. Process metrics and quality outcomes are more important than ever in today’s health care landscape and Sue focuses on making our SSOG entities destination and clinically-integrated organizations. Sue is responsible for providing strategic support and leadership in clinical quality, patient safety, regulatory readiness, emergency preparedness, and content management across SSOG, and in collaboration with Centura Health. She provides clinical data analysis support to entity Chief Medical and Nursing Officers to identify and set targets for process improvement opportunities.
Sue has held leadership positions at Rose Medical Center and St. Anthony Hospital entities in Denver, and was a senior consultant with Healthgrades, one of the nation’s leading clinical excellence research and consulting groups. She has a Master of Science Degree in Management and Organizational Development from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Management from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. Sue is also a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality; Fellow, American College of Healthcare Executives; and a Certified Professional in Patient Safety.
Vice President of Strategy, South State Operating Group
Bill is responsible for executing and monitoring our growth strategies in support of the Centura Health 2020 system strategy, and developing and expanding our various systems of care to provide synergy across our region and Centura Health.
Bill has 20 years of clinical and business experience, including large cardiology and cardiovascular surgery physician practice management and hospital operations. Prior to joining Penrose-St. Francis in 2011 as the Administrative Director of Cardiovascular Services, he served as the Executive Director of Parkside Cardiology for four years.
Bill has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English (Cum Laude) from the University of Colorado and a Masters of Health Care Administration from Medical College of Virginia. He is a Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE, since 1999) and a former President of the Virginia Medical Group Management Association. He is also a Member of the American College of Cardiology.
Vice President of Operations, Penrose Hospital
Lonnie has 25 years of operational health care experience and has been with Penrose-St. Francis since 2007. Prior to assuming his current role, he held the title of Administrative Director of Surgical & Imaging Services as well as Director of Orthopedics and Neurosurgical Service Line for PSF. He now has operational responsibility for several departments including Surgical Services, Imaging Services, Facilities, Construction, Support Services (Environmental, Food and Nutrition, Security and Valet Services), Pharmacy and Laboratory. He also spearheads hospital joint ventures and business development initiatives.
He began his health care career in the U.S. Army, serving eight years in multiple areas, including Angiography, Cardiac Cath, Cat Scan, X-ray, and MRI. He held the title of Director of Diagnostic Imaging Services for the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center in Florida and was Chief Operating Officer for MDiagnostics Inc., a company in Metairie, Louisiana, specializing in outpatient imaging. Lonnie has a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Ottawa University and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Practice Management from Texas Tech University. He also possesses national registries in Radiology, Computerized Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Lonnie is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Vice President of Finance Penrose-St. Francis Health Services
Patrick has 30 years of Decision Support, Accounting and Finance experience in the health care industry, all with Penrose-St. Francis. He began his career as a Staff Accountant in Finance and has held several titles over the past 30 years, including Controller and Director of Finance since 2005. Patrick is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial operations at Penrose-St. Francis and will assist with strategic initiatives designed to increase our financial performance, quality and breadth of services. He leads our annual fiscal planning cycle, including strategic, capital and operational budget processes. Patrick also facilitates accurate productivity reporting and benchmarking. Patrick has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of Southern Colorado (now Colorado State University – Pueblo), and a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Troy University.
Vice President of Nursing Services, St. Francis Medical Center
Martha comes to Penrose-St. Francis from the Bon Secours Health System in Richmond, VA., where she was the service line director for Women’s and Children’s Services, having responsibility for six hospitals within the system. Prior to this, she was the Women’s and Children’s Service Line Director at Sutton Children’s Hospital, part of CHRISTUS Health, in Shreveport, LA. Martha is responsible for the planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and evaluation of Nursing Services across the health care continuum at SFMC, and integrates Nursing Services with all hospital services and functions. She has the authority and responsibility for developing organization-wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients’ nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated and met.
Martha has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa., a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration and Health Care Services from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., and is pursuing a doctorate degree in Nursing through the University of Colorado. She is also a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and the American Nurses Association (ANA).
Vice President of Nursing Services, Penrose Hospital
Rose Ann has more than 33 years of clinical and health care leadership experience, all at Penrose-St. Francis. She began her career as a Staff RN in Oncology and has served as a Clinical Nurse Manager for several departments over the years. She had been the Director of Patient Care Services for Penrose-St. Francis since 2007 since assuming her current role.
Rose Ann possesses a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and a Master of Science degree in Nursing, both from the University of Phoenix. She is also Board Certified as a Nurse Executive and a member of the Colorado Organization of Nurse Leaders and the American Organization of Nurse Executives.
Johnny has been with Penrose-St. Francis Health Services since 2007, serving as the Manager of Marketing and Public Relations, and then Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications, before assuming his current role in 2012. Johnny oversees all media, associate and community relations; crisis communications; brand management; strategic marketing; service line development; and social media initiatives for SSOG. He collaborates with Group leadership in aligning strategic marketing and service line development plans with the overall SSOG vision and goals to build profit and volume while promoting brand integration and consumer awareness.
Prior to joining Centura Health, Johnny enjoyed a distinguished, 24-year career with the U.S. Air Force, directing global public relations, marketing and strategic communications throughout the U.S., Europe, the Pacific, and the Middle East. He has routinely worked with CNN, FOX News, USA Today, National Public Radio, New York Times, NASCAR, Major League Baseball, and the National League Football. He led communication efforts during the Global War on Terror at the largest air base in Qatar, and began a new Air Force communications office in Kuwait. Johnny directed the Air Force’s outreach campaign following Hurricanes Rita and Wilma in Florida, and facilitated international media coverage into war-torn Sarajevo during the U.S. delivery of humanitarian aide to refugees. Johnny has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College and is a Distinguished Graduate from the DoD Public Affairs Officers Course.
