The Level III Trauma Center at St. Francis Medical Center is the home base for the Flight For Life® Colorado air-ambulance helicopter service and the maternal/child transport team. When a member of the community experiences a physically traumatic event, our three-room trauma center provides the necessary immediate care. Last year, our trauma team treated more than 600 trauma patients.
The Level III designation we have received from the CDPHE means that that we provide an initial evaluation when a trauma patient arrives at St. Francis Medical Center. Comprehensive medical and surgical inpatient services are available to those patients who can be maintained in a stable or improving condition without specialized care. Emergency physicians and nurses are immediately available, and surgeons within 20 minutes, to assess, resuscitate, stabilize and initiate transfer as necessary to a higher level trauma care service. In addition we also have 24/7 hour lab and radiology, 24/7 on call OR with anesthesia coverage and a trauma reporting system to the state.
The need for higher level trauma has been growing in the north Colorado Springs area as the community has continued to grow. This new official designation will enable more patients from northern El Paso County to stay in their community. It also enhances the partnership with local emergency medical service (EMS) agencies that will not have to travel far outside the community as frequently for patients that need higher level care.
As part of Colorado's largest trauma system, St. Francis Medical Center has access to Centura Health's Trauma System's emergency and trauma resources, including our sister hospital in Colorado Springs - Penrose Hospital. The trauma facilities at St. Francis Medical Center provide trauma care for community members in Colorado's eastern towns like Yoder, Calhan and Peyton.
