Penrose-St. Francis Primary Care consists of Dr. Gary Klein, two board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioners and one certified Physician Assistant who specialize in the health of your family. Our health care team stands equipped to care for the entire span of your family's primary care needs, including young children and teens, men’s and women's health, and geriatrics.

Meet Our Providers

Gary Klein, MD Dr. Klein is board-certified in family medicine and brings more than 30 years to Penrose-St. Francis Primary Care. He attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine and his residency at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine Family Practice Residency Program. He is a member of the El Paso County Medical Society, Colorado Medical Society, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Medical Association. He has a special interest in lipidology, high level cholesterol tests and helping develop these new tests. In his spare time he likes long distance bike riding and running, sports car racing, instructing high performance track driving, skiing, backpacking and enjoying time with family and good friends.

Sharon Ortiz, ANP Sharon is a board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner with more than 11 years in practice. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the former University of Southern Colorado (now CSU Pueblo), and her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Colorado. Her special interests include chronic disease management, geriatrics, and women's health. In her spare time she likes the great outdoors. Being a Colorado Native, she enjoys biking, ATV riding, camping, fishing, and traveling.

Katherine Scally, RN, BSN, MS, MSN, ANP-BC Kathy is a board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner with more than 26 years as a practicing nurse. She has worked in various settings from an active duty Army nurse to Director of Nursing for an assisted living facility and spending the last 9 years as a nurse practitioner. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from DePauw University, her Master of Science in Nursing from George Mason University and her Master of Science in Guidance and Counseling from Austin Peay State University. Her special interests include chronic disease management, geriatrics, and dementia and traumatic brain injury(TBI). She worked on the first studies completed at Ft Carson on TBI. In her spare time she likes to sew, read, ski, travel and spend time with her family and friends. She has recently started playing the violin.

Kate West, PA-C, MPAS Kate is a Certified Physician Assistant with over 7 years experience. She worked for several years in pediatrics, including the care of newborns and inpatient pediatrics. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with emphasis in Human Biology from Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska and her Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. A decorated combat veteran, she received her commission as an officer in the United States Army and served as an active duty physician assistant. Her special interests include pediatrics, women’s health, and behavioral health. In her spare time she likes to travel, read, play the piano, cook, and spend time with family.
