Role of the GI Staff

Role of the Gastroenterologist

  • Evaluation and management of gastrointestinal disease and liver disease.
  • Education consists of four year college degree, medical school, three years of internal medicine training and three to four years of specialized gastrointestinal training.
  • Patient care responsibilities include office evaluations, hospital consultations, and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Other responsibilities include participating in continuing medical education, national professional society activities and hospital committees.

Role of the Gastroenterology Registered Nurses

  • Assessment of patient's physical and mental status prior to the examination.
  • Education of the patient about the procedure, sedation, after care.
  • Monitoring and assessing of the sedated patient during and following the examination.
  • Assist the physician with the procedure.
  • Supervise support staff.
  • Registered Nurse education can consist of a four year college degree: 
    • BSN-Bachelors of Science in Nursing
    • a Diploma-three years education
    • an Associate Degree-2 years
    • MSN---Master in Nursing
    • PhD-doctorate in nursing
  • Learning the basics of Gastroenterology nursing requires three months of special training.
  • Learning the advanced techniques of ERCP, EUS, or manometry requires a minimum of one to three months for each.
  • Registered nurses in the GI Lab obtain at least 10 hours per year of GI specific education, an additional 10 hours in general nursing education.  The nurses participate in the state and national Gastroenterology Nurses organization.  Many of the Penrose GI nurses are certified in Gastroenterology Nursing.
