Health ministry is an intentional effort to reclaim and enhance the role of health and healing in the church. It combines the worlds of science and faith in promoting health and healing within a congregation and the community by using health promotion and disease prevention models in collaboration with belief systems.
Parish nursing is one model of health ministry which employs a registered nurse in a congregation to be a health educator, personal health counselor, coordinator of volunteers, liaison to community services and integrator of faith and health. Centura health supports a pastoral nurse in providing health ministry services to Westside Cares and its supporting churches. Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has a health ministry consultant available to provide education, supervision and support to begin or sustain health ministry within a congregation.
