• The John Zay Guest House

  • In November 2008, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services opened the John Zay Guest House, an 11-suite hospitality residence available for outpatients and families of patients receiving treatment at Penrose Hospital or Penrose Cancer Center. Located on the northeast corner of Tejon and Madison, just south of Penrose Hospital, this home-away-from home for patients living 30 miles or more outside of Colorado Springs provides respite and an opportunity for families to remain together during treatment. The house provides precisely what is needed – a place to sleep, shower, eat, pray and to find comfort and companionship. All of this gives patients and families one less thing to worry about when dealing with incredibly stressful medical situations.  Many of these families have very limited financial resources, and having to find and pay for lodging brings an additional burden.

The house is named in remembrance of an extraordinary man, John Zay, who, as a former hospital Chaplain and a cancer survivor, comforted and inspired myriads of people, particularly those faced with catastrophic illness.

A great deal of thanks goes to George Hess, III, President of Vantage Homes, and Brad Ausmus, past President of HBA Cares, who oversaw the construction of this wonderful project. Thanks also to the many trades people who donated their time, talent, and compassion, and helped see the project reach fruition on November 3, 2008.

John Zay Guest House ExpansionJohn Zay Guest House
In the six years since opening, the John Zay Guest House has almost always been full, and now has a continual waiting list of 5-7 families. There have been as many as 20 families waiting for a room – enough to more than fill an entire second house. As Penrose-St. Francis’ reputation as a regional center of excellence for oncology and cardiovascular services grows, we anticipate this need to only increase. There will be more patients and families from outside of Colorado Springs who need accommodation.

    The Plan
We are excited to announce our current plan to build an expansion onto the existing house, adding 9 to 10 mini-suites. This expansion would make 3,300 additional nights of lodging available to families and patients. The key people involved in building the original house have generously offered to lead the expansion effort, and will contribute the project management (Vantage Homes), architecture (KGA), engineering (JR Engineering), and development planning in-kind. The Housing & Building Association of Colorado Springs will coordinate other in-kind contributions of labor and some materials. Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation has committed to supporting this project, which will be funded entirely through philanthropy.

Healing the “whole person” – body, mind and spirit - is truly emphasized at John Zay Guest House.  The house is managed by Sister Lou Krippel and Mickey Zay (John’s widow), and dedicated volunteers, who console, pray, celebrate and grieve with house guests.  The stories and comments from patients and families repeatedly show the tremendous influence that the John Zay Guest House had on their lives.
